This is an undergraduate course on introductory operating system. This course introduces the basic facilities provided in modern operating systems and will cover technical details of three parts. In the concurrent part, concurrent processes, multi-threads, CPU scheduling are in the course, we will learn how to manage multiple tasks that execute at the same time and share resources. In the memory management part, the topics will cover the following contents, linking, dynamic memory allocation, dynamic address translation, virtual memory, and demand paging. In the file system part, file system, storage devices and its subsystem, disk management and scheduling, directories, protection, crash recovery, and input/output management are included. And, a few smaller topics such as virtual machines will also be introduced. Through this course, students will gain extensive knowledge on principles and modules of operating systems and learn the basic installation and administration of Linux operating system. By paper studies, students will understand technical details of systems concepts like virtualization and container. In addition to the study of OS design theory, some practical experience with systems programming and tools will be gained in this course.
