This course introduces freshman students to canonical texts of different genres. Over the course, students will pick up skills for literary analysis, become familiar with various literary conventions, acquire cultural capital, and explore social, political, and cultural issues addressed in our readings. What is third-person omniscient narration? What is a Shakespearean sonnet? Why is it important to read texts about minorities? And why are texts like Antigone still relevant to us?

Participation and Quizzes If you do not show up by 9:10 am, you lose 3 points of the participation grade (10 points in total). Tardiness makes it difficult to make public announcements and start our activities on time. If you are sick or have to be absent for legitimate reasons, please let me know in advance and use the Students Leave System. Legitimate leaves will exempt you from the deduction of participation grade. Undocumented and unexcused leaves will affect your participation grade. If you arrive later than 9:10 am, you may still take the weekly quiz and participate. The weekly quizzes will cover readings of the week. Depending on how many quizzes we have, you should be able to choose your best 8-10 grades. If you miss more than three quizzes, your grade will suffer greatly. Individual or Group Presentations For more information about what to include in your presentation, go to our course website on e3. See the PDF file "Freshman English Syllabus (Fall 2017)." Final Projects The final project is open to your interpretation. Depending on the nature of your project, you may work alone or with others. We will meet on Nov. 29 to talk about your project. If the presentations take more than one class to cover, we will update our syllabus to make necessary accommodations.
