This course introduces students to basic communicative skills in academic and non-academic settings. We will use TED talks, skits, popular series, and other resources to expand vocabulary, pick up context-appropriate expressions, learn the knack for effective communication, and explore several urgent issues (gender, ecology, technology, etc.). At the end of this term, students will collaborate in small groups (of 2-3 people) and produce TEDesque speeches by addressing one social issue of their interest. To complete this final project, students will learn how to cite and analyze sources, work on a team, and meet with the instructor.

Participation and Weekly Quizzes You have to talk in class to get your participation grade. If you show up but do not speak in class, I will call on you to make sure that everyone participates. If you are late for classes and do not show up by 1:30 pm, you also lose half of the weekly participation grade. Tardiness makes it difficult to make public announcements and start our activities on time. If you are sick or have to be absent for legitimate reasons, please let me know in advance and use the Students Leave System. Legitimate leaves will exempt you from the deduction of participation grade. Undocumented and unexcused leaves will impact your participation grade. If you arrive later than 1:30 pm, you may still take quizzes and participate. The quizzes will cover vocabulary and main ideas in our previous class (for example, in Week 3, you will answer questions about our Week 2 materials). I will not ask you to define obscure words like "polyalanine," but you may have to define daily words like "intersex" and "trapeze." I may also play a short clip of the TED talk and have you write down what you hear or answer relevant questions. Depending on how many quizzes we have, you should be able to choose your best 8-10 grades. If you miss more than three quizzes, your grade will suffer greatly. We will have two mandatory group meetings at my office. Your presence is part of the participation grade. If you miss any group meeting, you have to ask your teammates for missed information. We will not have quizzes during these meetings. You may make additional appointments or have earlier group meetings with me when you feel ready. Each meeting is 15-20 minutes long. Classroom Procedures In the first two hours, we will go through the roster, review our previous materials, and address concerns relevant to our class or life on campus in general before we discuss our assigned TED talks. The discussion about TED talks should take 60-90 minutes. In the third hour, we will take a quiz on our readings of the previous class. Then, we will watch skits, a 20-minute series episode, or a longer documentary to pick up expressions and discuss relevant issues. To make the best of the TED talks, please listen to the assigned talks at least three times. At first listen, turn off the English subtitles. Have your pen and notebook ready to jot down keywords and ideas and see if you could summarize the whole speech afterwards. Some talks may be more difficult because you do not have the vocabulary. Be patient and see how the presenter tries to make complicated issues accessible for the general audience. At second listen, you may rely on your textbook. Break the whole speech into paragraphs. Consult the dictionary and google unfamiliar ideas. This could be a time-consuming process. Do not postpone your work until the night before class. At third listen, you may turn on the English subtitles or follow the online transcripts. How is the talk structured? What did you learn? What would you like to know more? Did the talk remind you of anything similar or different in Taiwan and elsewhere? Put down questions, topics, or points on your textbook for discussion.
