現代戲劇選讀

Course goals In this course, we will study the masterpieces of contemporary European and American drama. Through analyses on plot, theme, characters, settings and dialogues, we can explore how the playwrights and directors represent the social problems, family issues and individual thinking and desire in the intersection among nation, race, and gender. Contextualizing these plays, we can also discuss the construction of gender, sexuality and identity along the axes of nationalism, capitalism and colonialism. Furthermore, we can investigate how these masterpieces impinge impact on their successors with their unique style, theatrical politics and aesthetics. If possible, we will view the video recording of some plays to review their theatricalization.

Course requirements and grading Class participation and discussions: 10% (skipping the class without medical proof will result in deduction of grades. Skipping 3 classes will result in failure of this course) Quiz: 10% Oral Presentations: 15% (Each student will conduct one oral presentation (20-25 minutes) in the semester).
