We will try to identify and examine what is or isn't uniquely Irish from a number of writers' perspectives. By going through a specific corpus of short fiction, we will try to come to a deeper understanding of Irish people's disaffection with tradition and their aspirations for modernity. Whereas Irish culture is initially folk--a tradition which has persisted to this day--what is of special interest to us is how literary short fiction in its own ways documents and reshapes Irish national awareness from the Act of Union to the founding of the Free State. In our reading and discussion, we will try to highlight, among other things, the plight of the dispossessed peasants as well as the dilemmas of the Protestant Ascendancy. Comparative notes will also be made, when appropriate, on how Irish short fiction compares with its English Victorian and modernist counterparts.
