To understand the fundamental principles of mechanics To know how to apply them in research studies and performing computer simulations Topics to be covered: 1. Mechanics of a system of particles and the elementary principles 2. Variational principles and Lagrange's Equations 3. The virial theorem for the central-force problem 4. Motions of rigid bodies 5. Dynamics of damped harmonic oscillators and small oscillations 6. The Hamilton equations of motions 7. Canonical transformations: Poisson brackets and Liouville's theorem
