This course is to equip students with the knowledge and ability to utilize new digital design media -- primarily for design, simulation, evaluation, and fabrication. This course is divided into two modules, each with its own term project. Module 1 introduces computational design and digital fabrication technologies, which are also crucial to modern designers who want to facilitate digital means to free-form design and rapid prototyping. Module 2 introduces tools for CAD/CAM, mainly in workflow and simulation. Therefore, this course is a preparation for young designers who would embrace new media and new production processes as their weapon to defeat unforeseen issues in the future.
Students with sufficient computer literacy and background in design, or get permission from the instructors. Students should bring their own laptop (BYOD) for in-class tutorials and practices. This is a required course for MS 1st year students. It is strongly suggested for all IAR students.
Software to be installed by student: Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Fusion 360, meshmixer, and others.
Class participation: 20% Assignments: 80% (each module 40%)
