This course will introduce you to some of the main areas in Western philosophy (Greece, France, Germany mainly). We’ll begin by trying to understand what philosophy is. Then we’ll spend time gaining an introductory overview of several different areas of philosophy. Topics you’ll learn about will include: ‧ The construction of knowledge, where we’ll consider what our knowledge of the world and ourselves consists in, and how we come to have it; ‧ Philosophy of Mind, where we’ll ask questions about what it means for something to have a mind, and how minds should be understood and explained; ‧ Metaphysics, where we’ll think through some fundamental conceptual questions about the nature of reality. The main objectives of this course are: (1) to become familiar with major problems and the methods of dealing with them. (2) to develop critical skills and method for constructing argument. (3) to learn how to read and interpret texts and acquire an initial command of philosophical language. (4) to learn how to ask question and take part in debates.

This class is an introduction, there is no need to have previous experience of philosophy.

This course is taught half through lectures by the teacher and half through group activities where students take part actively in the management of the class. Lectures are partly in Chinese and English, activities can be hold in Chinese or English according to student’s language skills. The main purpose of this course is to develop critical skills and method for constructing argument. Topics are selected by students on the basis of proposition made by the teacher. After a lecture on the topic, the teacher brings a selection of texts or other materials (art products, films) related to the topics. These materials are discussed in small groups where groups examine problems and answer given by a famous author, questions of translation of concepts into Chinese, comparison with other philosophies, etc. Then each group presents their opinions and impressions to other groups. The ideas of students are developed, confronted and compared by students themselves and teacher in class. New questions, debate and suggestions rise from this in order to further the readings.
