While learners study a language, they are expected to be able to learn the most with the awareness of their learning autonomy and the willingness to express themselves actively in learning processes. Thus, based on that, this class will help students improve skills necessary for better successful English communication, listening, reading, writing and speaking, through the use of English as the medium of instruction, the use of DVD / CD, and other classroom interactive activities. Freshman English I is an integrated course with an emphasis on speaking and listening. This will acclimate their ears to understanding spoken English easily, and oral practices will increase their speaking fluency. In order to master English as a tool of verbal communication, emphasis will also be included on developing native-like vocabulary (idioms), speech patterns, and pronunciation. In this course, students will (1) To practice and improve speaking, listening, and reading higher level English dealing with more mature or controversial subjects, (2) To assistant students with fluency English communication skills to fit in this multi-cultural world, which may help them to have better plans for their both foreign and domestic further study, (3) Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, (4) Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, (5) Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, (6) Develop writing fluency by writing a short passage in 170-200 words.
Students need intermediate level of English proficiency.

Attendance: 10% Mid-term and final exams: 40% Required writing assignment: 5% (a passage of 170-200 words) GEPT related works: 15%, including one in-class practice test and four practice tests (10%) and self-study stamps on VOD passport (5%) Group project: a 5-minute show (video recording) (10%)(Students will need to complete the assignment by Week 16. In addition, you will present the project to the class.) Quizzes (15%) Performances (participation) in class (5%)
