Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: -Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, -Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, -Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, -Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words. For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.
a) In-class participation: students will engage in in-class activities in pairs throughout the semester. You will work with a different partner after midterm exam. b) Attendance: two points will be deducted for one absence for no reason, one for a sick leave or a leave for personal affairs, and no deduction for school with a proof. c) Required writing assignment: choose the topic from World Class units. It will be done in class on January 3, 2018. d) Supplementary materials: including outside readings, Ted talks or CNN 10 on Voicetube. Students will read 5 supplementary readings in class throughout the semester. After each reading, students will work in pairs discussing and completing a worksheet. Also, CNN 10 (student news) and clips of interesting videos will be introduced in class. While watching the programs, students also need to work on worksheets. e) Details about midterm and final exams will be announced in class two weeks before the test day. f) Students can access E3 for course schedule, announcements, or the answer key to the workbook.
