Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: 1. identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, 2. gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, 3. develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, 4. develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short written passages (170-200 words). For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.

Attendance is mandatory. Sleeping, using cell phones, silent and inactive sit-ins and any disruptive behaviors will cause the Attendance and Participation credits (10%) not to be granted. Absence up to eight hours will make your semester grade suffer. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. Use of any electronic devices is not permitted. Withdrawal from the course will not be granted due to the cause of frequent absences.
