The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view).For writing, students will build their paragraph writing skills and eventually learn to the ability to write a five paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.
Students who wish to take this course must attend the first class.
1. Attendance, in-class discussion, & in-class participation: 10% You’re required to actively participate in weekly in-class discussion. Please finish the assigned tasks (see course schedule distributed by the teacher in week 1) before you come to the class. Your in-class participation will be evaluated. Attendance will be taken in the beginning of every class so please be on time. Two points will be deducted from your final grade for each unexcused absence. A valid proof is required for excused absences (e.g., being sick or attending conferences). Absence from class cannot be an excuse for missing important announcements or late assignments. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed (e.g., check E3 or get notes & handouts from peers). 2. Midterm & Final Exams 40% There will be an in-class midterm and an in-class final exam based on the reading and writing materials covered in class. If you need to reschedule an exam date, you need to present a valid proof and inform me at least one week in advance. Otherwise, no make-up exams will be given. 3. Extensive reading and writing project: 20% You will work on the project in a group of 3 students. You will engage in extensive reading and writing outside of the class. Please see course handout on E3 for more details. 4. Paragraph/Essay writing assignments 20% You will have to turn in at least 5 paragraph/essay assignments this semester. Specific details will be given in class. 5. Reading discussion: 10% You're required to participate in discussion of assigned readings. See E3 for guidelines.
