* 根據陽明交大上課時間表所列
The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop more formal discussion skills based on critical reading of and reference to source materials. In this class, students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view). Discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats including whole-class analysis of topical issues, problem-solving group work, or short individual oral presentations.
*第一堂課必須要到! 沒到的學生,會被自動退選! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule on the first class. If you do not attend the first class, you will lose your spot in this class. *3/20/2017 (week 6) 後秦老師請產假由邢小芬老師代課
Attendance: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken every class; be punctual. Unreasonably high unexcused absenteeism or chronic tardiness denotes a casual, less than professional attitude and a lack of commitment towards learning. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to failure of this course. Take note that your unexcused absences will still reflect towards your attendance grade. Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Late work is not accepted. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Cheating is NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines.
Attendance 10% To earn a full score in attendance, you must be present to every single class. Scores will be deducted for ALL absences whether excused or unexcused. Participation 10% Includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. Impromptu speaking 20% You will form groups of 4. Each person will take one role: speaker, ah counter, timer, evaluator. You will switch roles every session. The speaker of that day will come up to the class and present his/her speech. Discussion leaders 20% Students will be split into 5 groups. Each group will choose a reading article, make and print worksheets for classmates, and lead the discussion. Activities can include understanding the reading, learning new vocabularies, and interactive activities for classmates to participate in. After the discussion leading, the class and the teacher will give peer comments on the group’s performance. The time limit is 50 minutes. Midterm exam 20% This will be a paper based exam Final exam 20% Each student has 5 minutes to make an individual presentation related to one of the topics taught in class.
