概述

This course will develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a business context and use authentic materials provided by professional organizations. Each class will revolve around practical tasks and activities encouraging students to provide creative solutions to authentic business problems. These will enable students to consolidate and apply the knowledge they build up over the duration of the course. Interesting and interactive role-playing activities will be employed in each class to ensure that business skills are developed in an engaging and challenging way. These activities are based on the most important business skills such as those required for making presentations, negotiating, and chairing and participating effectively in meetings, among others. Successful students will also build a solid foundation of business related core vocabulary and language expressions commonly used in workplace settings. The course objectives are as follows: 1. To increase the students' ability to read, comprehend and discuss business materials in English. This includes the following skills: A. The ability to extract information from texts as well as from visual forms of representation, such as diagrams and charts, etc. B. An increased understanding of word formation as a means of vocabulary building. C. The ability to define relevant business terms. D. The ability to recognize and use various grammatical structures, especially those characteristic of business writing. 2. To develop business related writing skills. 3. To enhance the students' ability to better understand spoken English. In each class, students have opportunities to learn and practice useful communication skills required in various settings, such as chairing meetings, writing e-mails and business letters, and dealing with emergencies or customers' complaints. It is hoped that students can apply the communication techniques learned in this course by the end of the semester. Students taking this course are required to demonstrate appropriate communication skills based on any business situation assigned, such as giving a presentation about a given company. They are encouraged to actively participate in the class discussion or role play.
