概述

The course aims to improve students' overall communicative competence on English oral ability. Students will learn and practice prepared speeches and presentations, impromptu speaking, and leading discussions. Students will receive constructive feedback, presentation tips and comments from the teacher. Students should come to class prepared to interact with their peers.

先修科目

*欲修課者,第一堂請務必準時到課,否則視為自動放棄修課權利* The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule on the first class. If you do not attend the first class, you will lose your spot in this class.

教學方式

1. Handouts and online discussion platform: E3 (http://dcpc.nctu.edu.tw/) 2. Attend the class ON TIME. Being late for more than twenty minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour. TWO POINTS will be taken off of your final grade for each hour of absence. Do not be absent for more than TEN HOURS, or you will fail this course. 3. If you are absent in case of uncontrollable situations (e.g. illness, emergency and important occasions), you need to submit a FORMAL PROOF (a leave permit or a receipt of medical treatment) within ONE WEEK. DO NOT send it through e-mail. 4. Your active participation and performance in class will add to your grade. 5. If you are caught cheating on the exam, you will fail the exam and even the course. 6. There will be no make-up exam unless you have valid and official reasons for absence in advance. 7. No late work will be accepted (unless you have requested an extension and been given approval ahead of the deadline).

評分方式

10% Attendance and in class participation: This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments. 5% E3 Online Platform Participation: Student impromptu speeches and final presentations will be recorded (video) and uploaded onto the E3 Online Platform where students can interactively leave comments and discuss. Students must give constructive feedback to at least 5 student videos before the end of the semester. Specific dates will be set up so you have sufficient time to accomplish this task. At least one paragraph is recommended per video. As you will be graded on the content of your feedback, please leave comments that will help the speaker improve. Merely saying “Good Job!” is not enough. The speech rubric could serve as a guideline or reference to help you give comments. 5% VOD passport: Each student is required to attend at least 5 sessions of English Table held by NCTU Language Center (for more information: http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. 10% EnglishCentral practice: Each student is required to practice their English speaking on the website. Further instructions and details will be announced in class. 25% Speech & discussion practices: Each student will be required to practice speeches, presentations and discussions, including informative and persuasive speeches, speech about an interview, and group discussions. 10% Impromptu speaking: We engage in impromptu speeches every day. This area gives students opportunities to practice their impromptu ability in English. 15% Group presentation on lessons: Each student will be required to sign-up for a chapter in the textbook, present the content and lead a discussion based on that topic. 20% Final presentations (12-15 minutes): Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice (approved by the teacher). Your presentation should include activities/content that encourages class participation. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class.
