* 根據陽明交大上課時間表所列
The course is designed to improve student’s English oral presentation ability. Students will practice and deliver prepared speeches, memorized speeches, and impromptu speeches. The course will be a balance between student-centered and teacher-centered instruction. The E3 online platform will also be utilized allowing students to improve and practice after class. Peer-editing, both online and in class, will play a big role so students are expected to interact with peers.
*第一堂課必須要到! 沒到的學生,會被自動退選! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule on the first class. If you do not attend the first class, you will lose your spot in this class.
Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Be honest: Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Attend all classes: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken everyday in the first five minutes of class, so be punctual. Unreasonably high unexcused absenteeism or chronic tardiness denotes a casual, less than professional attitude and a lack of commitment towards learning. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to failure of this course. Writing help: If you feel you need help with your oral presentation written script, please book the writing consultation services offered by the LTRC/Writing Centre in Library B1. http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/ If you need grammar help, please visit the free online teaching videos on www.amstarcreative.com Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines.
10% Attendance and in class participation This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments. 10% E3 Online Platform Participation Student mini speeches and impromptu speeches will be recorded (video) and uploaded onto the E3 Online Platform where students can interactively leave comments and discuss. Students must give constructive feedback to least 10 student videos before the end of the semester. Specific dates (twice a semester) will be set up so you have sufficient time to accomplish this task. At least one paragraph is recommended per video. As you will be graded on the content of your feedback, please leave comments that will help the speaker improve. Merely saying “Good Job!” is not enough. The speech rubric could serve as a guideline or reference to help you give comments. The teacher will also provide constructive feedback, presentation tips, and comments on both the presenter and the student evaluations. Regular classes usually achieve macro, so with the addition of this interactive platform, students will have space to focus on the micro of the speeches. 5% English Table Each student is required to attend at least 10 sessions of English Table held by NCTU Language Center (for more information: http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. Another option is attending Toastmaster’s International, a club that focuses on English public speaking skills. You may attend Toastmaster’s in place of 5 English Tables; however, you may only go once. For more information please visit http://www.toastmasters.org.tw/clubs/hsinchu/index.html 20% Group Presentation on Chapters (30-50’) There are ten chapters for you to choose from. You will do a 30 minute presentation on your assigned chapter at the very beginning of the class. You will do this in groups of two or three partners. 10% Mini speeches - Self introductions (5’) 10% Impromptu speaking (2’) You will form groups of 4. Each person will take one role: speaker, ah counter, timer, evaluator. You will switch roles every session. The speaker of that day will come up to the class and present his/her speech. 15% Midterm: Oral speech on p. 81 (groups of 2) 20% Final: Individual Presentation (5-7' depending on the number of students)
