教學方式

1. This is an ENGLISH (or bi-lingual) course. International students, exchange students, and non-EE-background students are all welcome to attend. 2. You are expected to attend each class to get a better sense on how to prepare for the exams.

評分方式

1. Final score = midterm 1 + midterm 2 + final exam, and you should expect NO adjustment or finesse on the final score. (三次考試分數相加, 不調分) 2. The exams will NOT be restricted to materials covered in the textbooks or reference books. (考試內容不限於課本/參考書) 3. Closed-book with NO cheating sheet. (閉書考試, 無大抄可帶)

第 2 週1. An introduction to electromagnetics (first class) 2. Transmission line equations, voltage and current wave, characteristic impedance., voltage reflection and transmission.
第 3 週1. Different coordinate systems. 2. Gradient operator in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. 3. Divergence operator in Cartesian coordinates.
第 4 週1. Divergence operator in cylindrical coordinates. 2. Divergence theorem and Coulomb's law. 3. Curl operator in Cartesian coordinates. 4. Stokes' theorem and Ampere's law.
第 5 週1. Maxwell's equations in free space and in dielectric medium. 2. Relative permittivity and relative permeability concept: intuitive approach 2. Uniform plane wave and phase velocity.
第 6 週First midterm exam (35 points)

第 8 週1. Relative permittivity in terms of polarization vector: mathematical approach 2. Ionosphere and plasma frequency. 3. Electric potential for cylindrical wire
第 9 週1. Unit capacitance for cylindrical wire-lines and thick microstrip line. . 2. Reflection and transmission coefficients for voltage waves on the transmission line. 3. Boundary conditions for E. 第 10 週1. Complex permittivity and loss tangent 2. Attenuation of plane wave and skin depth 3. Dielectric loss and metal loss calculation for the transmission line
第 11 週1. Electric energy density and power dissipation (Joule's law). 2. Flow of electromagnetic power and Poynting vector. 3. Derivation of surface resistance for good conductor.
第 12 週Second midterm exam (35 points)
第 13 週1. Derivation of inductance for coaxial cable from energy perspective. 2. Further inspection on surface impedance. 3. Vector magnetic potential and Biot-Savart law. 4. Magnetice dipole moment and torque. 5. Magnetic field on top of current-carrying loop.
第 14 週1. Mutual inductance and self inductance 2. Inductance of solenoid and transformer 3. Source-free field in simple medium and wave-number vector
第 15 週1. Linearly and circularly circularly polarized waves 2. Fourier transform

教科書

1. Field and Wave Electromagnetics by D. K. Cheng will be used as one reference book, though it is pretty difficult to read and understand. 2. Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics by Ulaby adopts a much more interesting approach by starting with the transmission line application, and is the second reference. 3. No course-pack. (無上課講義)
