In this course we will focus on Chinese-English translation. Students will not only gain practice in translation, but also learn to avoid language that suggests direct translation. While principles of translation are discussed, focus is on performance. Course includes practice in translating short sentences and newspaper articles. Students must prepare typed translations of the assigned materials for each class.

Each class students will be asked to translate sentences and passages from handouts supplied by the instructor. Students are graded on how well they have polished prepared translation drafts. Students must prepare typed translations of the assigned materials for each class (one copy for the teacher, one retained by the student).
Daily performance: 70% Final translation project 30% Attendance is handled separately: for class missed 2 points are subtracted from the final grade (in addition to a zero score for daily performance).
