Grading Scale: Weekly quizzes (the average of all weekly quizzes multiplied by 6) 30 points Midterm examination 25 points Final examination 35 points Film quizzes (on 2 assigned films) 10 points 5% of extra bonus (if full attendance, with total 85 as ceiling) Total 100 points If you have a full attendance the whole semester, you will receive a 5% extra grade for your overall semester grade. For example, if your grade is 80, it will be increased to 84. If after the adjustment your grade exceeds 85, you receive 85. Weekly Quizzes: 1. The 16 weekly quizzes, starting in week 1, aim to examine if the assigned readings have been read, but not necessarily if they have been fully comprehended. 2. Each quiz has four questions and will be graded with the scale of 1 to 5. 3. Quizzes will be held as soon as the class begins. Latecomers cannot take the quiz, but must report themselves to the instructor and receive 1.0 as their quiz grade. 4. A student who is granted an official leave will receive his or her quiz grade’s semester average as the grade of the quiz he or she misses. For example, if the average of all the quizzes a student has taken is 4.65, he or she shall receive 4.65 for the missing quiz, if a leave has been granted. 5. The due credit a student shall receive for a granted leave will only be calculated and released by the end of the semester. Film Quizzes: 1. Two films are assigned and will be screened at NCTU Cinema for the Arts (Room FR326) in Weeks 7 and 16, as follows: a. Les Miserables (1998), on Monday, March 28, two screenings (3:30, 6:00 p.m.) b. Doctor Zhivago (1965), on Monday, May 30, two screenings (3:30, 6:00 p.m.) 2. The films on DVD are also available on one-day reserve at the Main Library. 3. The films will be quizzed respectively in class in Weeks 9 (midterm) and 18 (final). 4. The quizzes mean to check whether you have watched the films, not whether you remember the details in the plots. A rough knowledge about the characters’ names and their relations will help, which you could look up at the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/). 5. No materials or notes shall be consulted during any of the quizzes.
