The course is designed to advance students’ English writing skills through reading, in-class practices and discussion, peer-editing, and take-home writings. Students will learn to write a variety of simple paragraphs and essays with a complete argument, solid topic sentences, and a well-organized thesis statement.
Requirements and Policies: 1. Active participation and regular class attendance are required. Skipping 3 classes with no official or medical proof will result in failure in the course. 2. Students are required to write four essays, serve as other class members’ peer-editor, and do one group oral presentation on a specific topic listed on the syllabus. Students are also required to preview the textbook materials according to the syllabus and should be prepared to take related quizzes in class. 3. Plagiarism and cheating on exams are strictly prohibited and will NOT be tolerated. 4. All course-related announcements will be sent to your e-mail address on file at the e-campus website (http://dcpc.nctu.edu.tw/). Keep good maintenance of your mailbox and check your mails regularly. About Writing Assignments: 1. Each writing assignment must be carefully proofread and revised before submitting. 2. The finalized version must be more than 500 words, double-spaced, Time News Roman 12, and printed out. 3. Writing with Plagiarism will gain no point. 4. No late homework will be accepted unless you have a legitimate reason AND an official proof. Homework is always due at the beginning of the class; you will receive a deduction if you fail to turn it in on time. About Oral Presentation: 1. Each Group makes a 20-minute presentation. 2. In your oral presentation, select 2 to 3 sample writings from the chapter, discuss the theme of these writings and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. 3. You are welcome to use graphs, pictures and photos in your power point to aid your presentation. 4. Grading will be based on group performance. 5. Pay attention to time allocation. About midterm and final exams: exercises in textbook and in-class writing.
