This 3-credit course is designed to lay a solid foundation in students’ knowledge and skills of mass media and news translation. The weekly lecture will cover some basic techniques and principles that are used in news/mass media translation, as well as journalistic writing features. We will discuss students’ translation assignments in class; the job market and outlook of this profession will also be covered. Students will be exposed to a variety of text types selected from (but not limited to) newspapers, magazines, films, and television programs, with a focus on news coverage, editorials, feature articles, press releases, company profiles, advertisements, and scripts. This course demands a lot of hard work. Students are anticipated to take full responsibility in their own learning, and play an active role in class. Participation is crucial.

Attendance Policy: Please be punctual. Attendance is mandatory. Three absences will result in a failing grade; there’s no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Requirements: 1. Please upload your assignment (Word file) to E3 by 18:00 on Thursdays and hand in a hardcopy at the beginning of each class session. Failure to hand in either one will give you a “50%” for the assignment, no matter how good it is. 2. Late assignments, both the e-copy and the hard copy, will not be accepted. 3. Cheating and plagiarism are absolutely not permitted. If someone is found cheating on an exam, or plagiarizing on an assignment, it means he/she will get a zero for that exam/assignment. Please always cite the sources you use for information in all your assignment. 4. There will be no make-up exams unless you have valid and official reasons for absence provided to the teacher in advance. 5. Unless otherwise specified, all assignments need to be typed and double-spaced, using size 12 Times New Roman or Arial fonts (or equivalent). Please remember to include your name and student number. When submitting your homework, please save the file as: Student’s English Name_Student ID_Home work number E.g., Jessica_Lu_12344321_HW03
