This course aims to introduce students with theories and issues about ethnicity and race in communication (ethnic communication) in Taiwan (with a focus on Hakka) and around the world. In this class, we will introduce ethnic communication and its relationship with communication technologies, including social media, in different countries. We will start from Taiwan and expand the scope to other countries (e.g., Japan, China, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, UK, Africa, Canada, and the United States). We will decide the cases after we meet in class. Students will have opportunities to learn the theories related to ethnic communication and case studies around the world. In addition, students will be encouraged to think critically about ethnicity and race in communication, including the languages, cultures, identity, and communication technologies. At the end of the class, we will connect what we have learned in this class with policy-making to help students develop the skills they need in their future studies on communication technologies, policy development, and their future careers.
Course Requirements: Active Participation If you are not prepared to actively participate in this course, you will not do well in this course.
