Culture for the people, by the people, of the people Culture is not just monopolized by big corporation, such as FOX, Hollywood, and Facebook etc. for their own private profit. Culture is also not just controlled by state or Big Brother, for propaganda, brain wash, and work as a megaphone. There is a beautiful, inspiring, and wonderful side of culture---Culture for the people, by the people, of the people. This digital world has provided a hotbed for people to explore multiple cultural ways to express their thoughts and opinions. We are living through a period of remarkable creativity in political expression and witness flourishing cultural actions: from anticonsumerism TV ads to websites, "billboard liberation" to faux corporations, digital hijacking to antiwar sewing circles. Not to mention other forms of cultural activism with longer history, such as social realist films, social documentary, document photography etc. Cultural activism is a mash up of artistic expression and activism grounded in the need for social justice and political change. This course combines five major sections to introduce these important cultural actions. The first section focuses on analyzing the mainstream media in order to know the infringement of our cultural citizenship. The second section is the introduction of Cultural Activism and Culture Jamming. We travel back to 1960’s to see how the famous Billboard Liberation Front and other groups and individuals challenge and change the mainstream thoughts. The third section is a workshop of People’s Theater and we will invite important People’s Theater director in Taiwan to organize the workshop. The fourth section is curating and we will have curators from grass root organization and NGO to share their experiences, especially from the minority groups, such as immigrant, AIDS movement, and homeless. The last section is Art, including how artists in organize, including case introduction and new art form. .
