Course Goals: 1.Develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing to deal with complex situations within daily lives, and discuss about complex issues, such as internet, art, technology, superstition, etc. Students will also be able to read simple document forms and announcements. 2. Capable of writing a short essay of at least 300 words to express oneself. Course Description: This course uses the textbook “A Course in Contemporary Chinese 4” (about 6 chapters) to help students develop proficient language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing that would enable them to communicate effectively in their daily lives. Students will learn commonly used new vocabularies and grammar that are not often used in daily conversations. Through the course, students will be able to use appropriate Chinese language to carry on discussions to further understand Taiwanese culture and language. Students' outcomes: 1.Can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc., including short narratives. 2.Can give straightforward and coherent descriptions of personal experiences, feelings, dreams, hopes, and real or imagined events. 3.Can explain plans or events in sequence, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
1.For those who have taken Basic Chinese II of the Chinese Language Course for International Students. 2. Or those who have taken Chinese for at least 288 hrs. (2 hrs/week). NOTE: Students who missed the first class will be dropped from the course.
Reminders: 1. For effective learning, students are required to handwrite the vocabulary (Chinese characters) in every lesson for multiple times to achieve familiarity. 2. Regular attendance is required, and students who have more than 5 unexcused absences will be failed. A total absence of 1/3 of course hours will lead to an automatic failure.
Evaluation: Attendance and Participation: 30% Homework and Quizzes: 30% Midterm Exam (oral and written): 20% Final Exam (oral and written): 20%
