Course Description This course aims at developing the basic skill of reading Japanese legal materials- court cases, statutes and legal articles. In addition, by using the recent important court cases in the field of the Constitution, Civil Law, Corporate Law, Criminal Law and so on as reading materials, this course will provide the basic understanding of Japanese law and legal system as well. The selected topics are subject to change after the meeting of the first class. For preparation for the class, students will be requested to submit English translation of the assigned part of the leading for the week material and the lecturer will review the translation and correct mistakes, if any. The lecturer will adjust the amount of the assignment in accordance with the Japanese fluency of students after the first week of the class. Each class will be divided into two sessions. In the first session, students will read out and review the translations on the legal material assigned for the week. We will review the important legal terms/ concept which are used in the reading. We will be precise to understand the Japanese legal concepts written in Kanji (Chinese character) in comparison with the legal concept in Taiwan. Though in principle, this course doesn’t teach the Japanese grammar, the lecturer will explain if there are parts difficult to understand grammatically. In the second session, the lecturer will provide the introduction and explanation of the legal topics in the material and the students will have a discussion on the issue. Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will have an advanced reading skill of Japanese legal materials and have a basic understanding of the current important legal issues in Japan.

Language Basic understanding of Japanese language is necessary, but those who just started learning Japanese and/or doing self-learning are also encourage to take the course. Prior Study Not required. Student Background Those who have interest in the legal practice relating Japanese companies and in doing researches on Japanese law are welcomed.

1.學期作業 There will be reading assignment every week and students are required to read and translate the assigned part. Since this course aims at improving reading skill in a careful manner, the amount will be adjusted in accordance with the Japanese fluency of attending students. 2.考試狀況 No examination. 3.評量方法 Attendance & class participation (70%) Final report (30%) Translation of a Japanese legal literature with the short analysis as the final report.
