The course objective is to teach how to assess needs and behavior of target users and how to systematically evaluate the usability and functionality of interactive systems using a variety of methods. These are core skills and concepts that most HCI and UX professionals will use on a daily basis. Specifically, students will learn to: ‧ Investigate needs and behaviors of target users ‧ Evaluate the usability, usefulness, and acceptability of interactive systems ‧ Select among diverse evaluation methods for specific goals and types of systems ‧ Give presentations that effectively communicate results of evaluations and argue for the validity and relevance of methods chosen The methods being covered include: ‧ Interaction Map ‧ Contextual Inquiry ‧ Personal and Scenarios ‧ Survey ‧ Comparative Analysis ‧ Heuristic Evaluation ‧ Usability Testing ‧ Emerging HCI and UX evaluation and research methods (online testing, experience sampling, diary study, Wizard of Oz) Students will apply these methods to a single product that will be chosen by their project group. They will be trained not only how to use the methods, but also how to choose the right method given a set of research questions.
