概述

This course covers the new emerging software-defined networking (SDN) technology and its integration with the network function virtualization (NFV) technology. SDN was proposed several years ago and since then SDN has become a very hot research topic and now is studied in the academia and industry worldwide. Recently, SDN is being deployed in data center networks, campus networks, enterprise networks, operator networks, and is expected to play a very important role in Internet of Things (IoT) networks and 5G cellular networks. In this course, we will first introduce the concepts of SDN, its use cases and its applications to give the students an overall picture of this new technology. Then, we will present the OpenFlow protocol standard, which is the most popular industry standard used for SDN today. The OpenFlow protocol is used by an SDN controller to control all SDN network devices. We will present several research tools that are commonly used by SDN researchers to learn SDN or develop, test, and evaluate the performances of SDN applications. These tools include Mininet OpenFlow network emulator, EstiNet OpenFlow Network Simulator and Emulator, Open VSwitch software switch, Open Daylight, POX/NOX, Ryu, and other SDN controllers. In addition, we will present how SDN can be used for network virtualization, how it can be integrated with Openstack cloud computing platform to better manage a data center network, and how it can be integrated with the network function virtualization (NFV) technology to provide service function chaining in a network, and many other application areas. Additionally, this course will present many important and high-quality SDN papers that have just been published in recent years. In recent years, P4 (Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors) has been proposed to further improve SDN and make the packet processing pipeline of a P4 switch fully programmable. In this course, we will also present the P4 language and trace real P4 program code to illustrate how to write P4 programs to achieve high-speed line-rate processing at the data plane of the network. The goals of this course is to let students 1) learn the concepts and technologies of SDN/P4 and NFV, 2) know how to use relevant SDN/P4 tools to develop SDN/P4 controller applications, and 3) study recent high-quality SDN/P4 and NFV papers to know the most recent advances of the SDN/P4 and NFV technologies. This is a graduate-level course, adopting the same teaching styles of an SDN course taught at Princeton University. Therefore, the coursework load may be considered very heavy by students who have not had a chance yet to study in a top university in the US. In this course, a student will need to read 25 high-quality SDN/P4/NFV research papers in the semester. Besides, he/she will need to orally present a paper in the class that is assigned to him/her, do an SDN/P4/NFV term project with his/her partner, write a technical report for his/her term project, and orally present the results of his/her term project in the class. If you are unable or unwilling to do these coursework, you should not take this course. On the other hand, if you are willing to spend a lot of time in learning the most advanced SDN/P4 and NFV technologies, then you are very welcome to take this course.
