The purpose of this course is to introduce to the students the basic theory of parabolic equations and wave equations. We will also introduce important conceptional framework such as the theory of distribution and the basics of Fourier transform.
A student taking this course should have a basic working knowledge of undergraduate analysis, as well as multi-variable calculus, and linear algebra. Also, this course is a continuation of the graduate course PDE I, which I taught in the last semester. In the last semester, we have discussed important concepts such as weak derivatives, and Sobolev spaces. So, a student taking this course should have a relatively strong background in functional analysis.
Attendance record will count 30% towards the final grade. Homework will count 30% towards the final grade. A take home final will count 20% towards the final grade. A written report together with a presentation of it wlll count a total of 20% towards the final grade.
We will closely follow the lecture notes by professor Vladimir Sverak at the University of Minnesota.
