The Uncanny and Its Representation (Spring, 2017-2018) We will re-examine some of the basic concepts of reality and its representation, esp. with regard to the tensions and limitations between the two cognitive fields. Differing from a realist epistemology which assumes one’s ability to know and to share what one knows the world, there are times when things cannot be explicitly comprehended, much less represented, in a rational light. Our discussion will be divided into two parts. We will begin with a brief discussion of realism in terms of some of the Enlightenment concepts. The idea of representation will then be investigated with a view to unfolding some of its obscure, even paradoxical, aspects. For a historical overview, we will specifically look into the sublime and the uncanny as they evolved and diffused. Since the uncanny covers a wide range of fields, we will spend some time reading texts (literary or otherwise) that best highlight different aspects of the uncanny. With prior agreement, Chinese texts or materials from non-literary fields will also be accepted as presentation or paper topics. Students are required to attend lectures and participate in discussion in addition to making an oral presentation (30%). A research paper (8-10 pages long for graduate students, or 3-5 pages for undergraduates) is required in addition to a straightforward written test--to make sure you finish your reading (70%).
