Discourse analysis is a broad and complex interdisciplinary field, which encompasses diverse theoretical and methodological approaches from linguistics, sociology, and anthropology. While all approaches share a commitment to understanding language use in context, they conceptualize context differently as it is relevant to understanding language use. This course will examine several influential approaches (e.g. Conversation Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, etc.), covering both theoretical issues and relevant methodological tools in each approach. The course involves both reading and data analysis exercises. The final paper is a larger piece of discourse analysis, using one or more approaches to analyze a transcript of naturally occurring conversation or written discourse. Students are expected to come away from the course with an ability to think critically about the way discourse operates in the world and an increased awareness of how different research problems invite different discourse analytic approaches.
