The term Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) describes an approach to language learning that is assisted through the use of a handheld mobile device. Mobile devices offer five distinct affordances for language learning: (1) portability; (2) affordable and ubiquitous access; (3) situated, just-in-time learning opportunities; (4) connection and convergence; and (5) individualized and personalized experiences (Meihuish & Falloon, 2010). In recent years, mobile technology has been applied in many areas of language learning, including vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, etc. This course is intended to give participants a general view of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) and its applications in language learning, such as location-aware learning environments, mobile games, mobile annotations, short messaging services, and virtual reality/augmented reality. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the theoretical foundations, uses and principles of applying mobile technology in EFL contexts. 2. Analyze the current developments and challenges regarding MALL. 3. Evaluate MALL Apps, lesson plans, projects, and activities for use in their own language classrooms. 4. Adapt existing MALL resources to suit the needs of their learners. 5. Understand the strategies to integrate mobile technology into EFL learning environments. 6. Design and develop appropriate curriculum in which EFL learners interact and negotiate meaning with the assistance of mobile technology. 7. Understand current research and future trends.
