Course Description This course aims to provide an introduction to essential issues in our contemporary world, in order to facilitate students’ profound understanding about the global environment surrounded us, while fostering comprehensive awareness regarding the dynamic development of human beings in recent years. The design of the course is to familiarize students with various important topics in the global society. Since we live in an increasingly globalized society, which generates both opportunities as well as challenges. Nowadays, rarely few countries and people could be isolated from the constantly changing world. The significance of the course lies on its objective to enhance students’ interests and abilities in understanding how the global society is composed of, operated and governed. This course contains several sub-fields, including: international politics; international conflict and cooperation; international organizations; international trade, finance, and investment; multinational corporations; regional integration; climate change; environmental issues; and technology development and globalization. Through lectures and class discussion, students will have a better understanding about our contemporary world, while facilitating their critical thinking and enhancing analytical abilities in comprehending these global issues independently. Objectives of the Course By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Develop a basic understanding about international society and constant attention to the development of international issues; 2. Facilitate the ability of using diverse perspectives to observe and comprehend major issues in the contemporary world; 3. Cultivate the ability of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and discourse.
Competent in English
1. The course will be conducted by the instructor’s lecture with PPT presentations, combining with the agenda-guided class discussion. Students need to be fully prepared and be familiar with the assigned readings before the class. 2. E3 teaching website and Facebook class discussion forum will be used.
