This course is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. This course will address reading and paragraph writing while supporting the communicative skills addressed in the first semester. In this course, students will: 1. Develop critical reading skills 2. Engage in reflection on readings 3. Apply insights gained from readings 4. Orally paraphrase and summarize texts, and reflect on the texts in oral discussion 5. Write complete paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting details, transition words, and concluding sentences 6. Continue to develop listening and speaking skills
If you fail to show up in the first period of the first class, you will automatically lose your spot.
1. Syllabus and grading scheme are subject to change and are either announced in class or via e3's announcement or email. 2. Please turn in homework on time. Late homework will not be graded for credit. 3. Full attendance and active engagement in group discussions is integral to the success of the course. 4. Dozing off or without a book will affect your grade. 5. Unexcused absences will affect your attendance mark.
1. Attendance: 10% 2. Participation: 10% 3. Midterm: 20% (paper test 10% and presentation 10%) Describe things that improved the quality of life in Taiwan or any city in Taiwan. Any form of presentation is welcome but has to be a video that lasts between 5-7 minutes. Everyone has to take part in the task. 4. Final: 20% (paper test 10% and presentation 10%) Topics will be given ahead of time. Each presentation has to last at least 8 minutes and no more than 10 minutes. 5. Passage Writing: 10% (2 paragraph assignments, a minimum of 200 words each) 6. You will do one in-class practice test and 3 online GEPT tests (test: 5, 6, and 7). You have to complete both sections for each test. 7. Self-study stamps on VOD passport (10 stamps): 5% 8. Homework and in-class quizzes: 15%
