Freshman English II is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) language curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. In this course, you are invited to be “Masters” not “Guests”. It means this course is student-centered. Preparation: You are required to read the textbook material before class. □ Participation: Active participation in classroom discussions and activities is essential to advance your English skills. □ Assignments & Tests: No late work will be accepted and no make-up tests will be given unless it is for an official reason with prior approval. □ Attendance: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to learn what was done in class that day. Every absence will lower your attendance grade by 2 points (final score), and being late reduces it by 0.5 point (final score). More than 3 unexcused absences may cause you to fail the course. □ Group Project: Students will be split into 5-6 groups, with each group being assigned one of the topics from the “Engage” activities at the end of each unit. Projects will be presented during weeks 14-16. Group members should work together to present a general summary of the topic and share current information with the class. Presentations should be about 10-15 minutes with each group member speaking equally. □ Required Writing Passage: The main focus of this course is on reading and writing. Each student will be required to write a passage of 200 words based on a topic related to the material we cover in class. □ Self-Study: In order to help you prepare for the GEPT test, you will be doing a number of in-class and after-class activities. At the end of the semester, you will take an in-class GEPT practice test to assess your progress over the semester. In addition to the in-class test, you are required to do 3 additional individual GEPT practice tests either on-line ( http://140.113.9.12:8000/ or http://dcpc.nctu.edu.tw/nctu_online/ ) or in-person at the self-study center. □ Exams: The mid-term & the final will be a written exam and will focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and paragraph writing. □ Useful Websites: http://www.eslgold.com/ http://iteslj.org/links/ESL/Writing/ http://eslcafe.com/ http://www.eslwriting.net/ http://linguistics.ohio.edu/opie/?page_id=1201 http://www.ted.com (TED Talk) http://www.bbc.com (BBC) http://www.cnn.com (CNN) http://www.voanews.com (Voice of America)
