This course aims to advance students’ listening and speaking skills. Students will further develop listening skills (e.g., identifying main ideas, details, making inferences, and note-taking) through less simplified and authentic listening materials. Students will also develop discussion skills through a variety of interactive activities. By the end of the course, students will learn to: 1. comprehend listening materials which cover more specialized or sophisticated topics, 2. identify and analyze points of view, arguments, or implicit information in the listening material , 3. lead and participate in effective group discussions and deliver oral presentations.
*第一堂課必須要到! 沒到的學生,會被自動退選! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule on the first class. If you do not attend the first class, you will lose your spot in this class. *3/21/2017 (week 6) 後秦老師請產假由郭詩芝老師代課
Attendance: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken every class; be punctual. Unreasonably high unexcused absenteeism or chronic tardiness denotes a casual, less than professional attitude and a lack of commitment towards learning. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to failure of this course. Participation: In this class, students are expected to participate in different roles. Roles include grammarian, ah-counter, and evaluator. Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Late work is not accepted. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Cheating is NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines.
15% Attendance and in class participation This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments. 10% E3 Online Platform Participation Student mini speeches and impromptu speeches will be recorded (video) and uploaded onto the E3 Online Platform where students can interactively leave comments and discuss. Students must give constructive feedback to least 10 student videos before the end of the semester. Specific dates (twice a semester) will be set up so you have sufficient time to accomplish this task. At least one paragraph is recommended per video. As you will be graded on the content of your feedback, please leave comments that will help the speaker improve. Merely saying “Good Job!” is not enough. The speech rubric could serve as a guideline or reference to help you give comments. The teacher will also provide constructive feedback, presentation tips, and comments on both the presenter and the student evaluations. Regular classes usually achieve macro, so with the addition of this interactive platform, students will have space to focus on the micro of the speeches. 20% Impromptu speaking You will form groups of 4. Each person will take one role: speaker, ah counter, timer, evaluator. You will switch roles every session. The speaker and evaluator of that day will come up to the class and present his/her speech. 25% Midterm – Role play (5') In groups of 2 students, role play a 5 min conversation on any of the topics related to our textbook. Use key vocabulary and phrases learned in class. Try to make the conversation as natural and smooth as possible. 30% Final Presentations Individual Presentation (7-8’)
