The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students are expected in this course to: (1) read a variety of texts styles with a critical perspective (i.e. distinguishing facts and opinions, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view, etc.) (2) be familiar with the effective use of reading strategies to enhance reading fluency. (3) build paragraph writing skills and eventually learn the ability to write a five-paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.
修畢英文基礎課程或具備等同CEFR B1英語文能力
Attendance is mandatory. Sleeping, using cell phones, silent and inactive sit-ins and any disruptive behaviors will cause the Attendance and Participation (10%) not to be granted. Absence up to eight hours will make your semester grade suffer. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. Use of any electronic devices is not permitted. Withdrawal from the course will not be granted due to the cause of frequent absences.
1. Attendance & participation 10% 2. Mid-term & Final exam 40% (Each exam will test you on two text contents, including those NOT covered in class.) 3. Writing assignments 25% (At least one paragraph writing assignment including multiple drafts and peers reviews, and several response papers to connect the readings in the textbook.) 4. Reading journal 15% (In groups of two, you keep a journal for assigned readings to record useful collocations for written communication, and also to reflect the use of critical reading strategies covered in this course.) 5. Online self-study 10% (Take quizzes, participate in discussion boards, and complete assigned tasks on MyEnglishLab.)
