Course description: Study of mechanics, waves and thermodynamics with a focus on conceptual understanding and problem solving skills. Course objective: Conceptual understanding of fundamental physics, improved problem solving skills, and improved ability to communicate your understanding. 概述:主要涵蓋力學,波,以及熱力學,著重觀念的理解及解題的能力。 目標:基礎物理觀念的完全理解,增進解決問題能力,增進闡述物理觀念能力。 Primary Learning Objectives(主要學習目標): During each class we will work on one or two of the following learning objectives. There will be an equal focus on conceptual understanding and developing problem solving skills. We will also spend much time translating between what we observe in nature and the words, pictures, graphs, and mathematics we use to model nature. Mechanics Description of Motion: Kinematics (1) Chapter 1: Be able to use dimensional analysis to make order of magnitude estimates. (2) Chapter 2: Be able to describe the relation between position, velocity and acceleration using words, motion diagrams, graphs, and mathematical formulae. (3) Chapter 2: Problem solving using the constant acceleration model in one dimension. (4) Chapter 3: Be able to translate between magnitude and direction of vectors and vector components. Be able to add and subtract vectors graphically as well as using components. (5) Chapter 4: Problem solving using the constant acceleration model of projectile motion. Physics of Motion: Dynamics (6) Chapter 5: Be able to describe in words, free body diagrams, and mathematical formula the forces acting on an object using the point particle model. 教學方式

We will have daily quizzes. The quiz will be handed out at the beginning of class, and will be based on the previous class. To prepare for the quiz read the notes and do the exercises for the previous class carefully. Also, it will be useful to work on the homework problems related to the previous class. In addition, we will have weekly discussion sections, during which you will work in groups on group problems. Quizzes will be graded mastery (M) or striving (S). There is no partial credit. Students receiving an S grade must redo the quiz on their own time and then meet with a professor to go over the problem to make sure they understand the concepts. Students may meet with the professor with another student if they wish. Students may not meet with the same professor twice in a row, and they must come to an office hour within one week of receiving their graded quiz. Students will be allowed to obtain mastery through these meetings for up to 4 quizzes. *Please register for the Physics Recitation (I) instructed by 吳建德 and Professor Tobochnik*
