概述

[1] In view of the growing consensus that writing is a social and conversational act, this course is designed to polish students' essay writing skills through asking students to participate in ongoing conversations about important public issues. [2] The textbook used in this course demystifies academic writing by isolating its basic moves, explaining them clearly, and representing them in the form of templates.

【Weekly writing assignments】 *Please submit your assignment in both .docx and .pdf formats on New E3 (https://e3new.nctu.edu.tw/login/index.php). *Late assignments will NOT be accepted or graded. 【Email exchanges】 *Please do NOT email me on New E3. It is difficult to reply when I am reading your message on my phone. If you have any question, please send your message to ctchou@nctu.edu.tw. *Please identify yourself in your message. Give me your Chinese/English names and student ID number, please. *Emails are for short notifications. If you have a list of questions, please ask me in class, make appointments, or visit me during my office hours. *Your message should come with an appropriate SUBJECT LINE: Questions about English Composition. An appropriate subject line will help me remember and retrieve your message.

[1] Weekly writing assignments: 30% [2] Midterm meeting for the term project: 10% [3] Final meeting for the term project 20% [4] Term project: 40% ==Topics for the term project== You are free to choose any topic for your term project. If you cannot come up with your own topic, choose one of the following topics for your term project. *The speech draft of your final presentation in Communicative Skills Workshop *Pros and cons of the merger of NCTU and NYMU *Is taking MOOCs better than attending real classes? *Are rumors part of the burden/job of being a celebrity? *Should all subjects in school be optional/elective? *Your web use records: is it good for your or not? *Surveillance: protection from crime or an invasion of privacy *Is homework helpful? *Can money buy happiness? *Is marriage outdated? *Is it sometimes kind to lie? *Can you find chemistry online? *Would you make sacrifices for the greater good? *Is it fair that people with no special skills get famous and rich from social media? If you like none of the above, you may propose your own topic.
