概述

This course introduces students to basic communication skills in academic and non-academic settings. We will use TED talks, documentaries, articles, and other resources to expand vocabulary, pick up context-appropriate expressions, learn the knack for effective communication, and explore two urgent issues about bodily variation today: disability studies and transgender studies. At the end of this term, students will collaborate in small groups (of 2-3 people) and produce TEDesque speeches by addressing one social issue of their interest. To complete this final project, students will learn how to cite and analyze sources, work on a team, and meet with the instructor.

Participation and Quizzes ---You have to talk in class to get your participation grade. If you show up but do not speak in class, I will call on you to make sure that everyone participates. You are encouraged to read through people’s comments on TED or YouTube when we discuss relevant clips in class. On TED, type the titles on the upper right corner, and you will see the clips and other information. On YouTube, type the titles in the search box. People’s comments may inspire you for class discussion. Feel free to quote and respond to others' comments. ---If you do not show up by 1:30 pm, you lose half of the weekly participation grade. Tardiness makes it difficult to make public announcements and start our activities on time. If you are sick or have to be absent for legitimate reasons, please let me know in advance and use the Students Leave System. Legitimate leaves (not including personal leaves) will exempt you from the deduction of participation grade. Undocumented and unexcused leaves will affect your participation grade. ---The quizzes will cover vocabulary and main ideas in our previous class. I may have you define some crucial words or use them in meaningful sentences. Or, I may play a clip from our previous class and have you summarize or explain it. If you arrive late, you may miss the quiz at your own risk. ---I will choose the highest 80% of your quiz scores for the final score. If you miss more than two quizzes, your grade will probably suffer greatly. ---We will have two mandatory group meetings. Your presence is part of the participation grade. If you miss any group meeting, you have to ask your teammates for missed information. We will not have quizzes during these meetings. You may make additional appointments or have earlier group meetings with me when you feel ready. Each meeting is 15-20 minutes long. AV Equipment I need two students to help us set up the AV equipment. One takes charge of the sessions before our mid-term exam; the other takes charge of the rest sessions. I will reward them with 1 bonus point for their final grade. Classroom Procedures In each class, we will address concerns relevant to our class or life on campus in general and sometimes play some games to warm you up for discussion. Then, we will have our quiz before we discuss our assigned materials. To make sure that you will participate in class discussion, you should try to summarize the materials in a couple of sentences, highlight passages, scenes, or issues of your interest, and explore relevant materials online or in the library to generate more discussions. You should take note of new words in our assigned materials. Mid-Term Exam I will ask you questions about our assigned materials over a 10-minute conversation. You should be able to summarize and critique the assigned materials. Final Projects ---Your final projects will take a form similar to a TED talk—13-15 minutes long. We will divide the whole class into groups of two or three people. The members on the same team will find a topic of their interest, look for relevant sources, design PowerPoint slides, and speak in front of the whole class in our final week. Each presentation is followed by a brief Q&A session (2-3 minutes). Throughout the term, we will highlight specific elements in a presentation. ---A cogent structure, a clear delivery, and a convincing argument are crucial to your presentation. While we will discuss only a few TED talks in class, you may watch other talks and be inspired. ---Before our final presentations, people on the same team will meet with me at least twice: ------In our first meeting, we should consider a few potential topics together. Why are you interested in particular topics? Why are they important? What have you known about them? And what do you want to know more? By the end of the first meeting, we hope to narrow our topics down to one. ------In our second meeting, we will highlight the following issues. What is new about your project? Do you have an argument? Are there any problems or limits in your project? How are you going to structure your presentation? Do you give people enough context to understand your topic? Do you define specific terms, so people know what you are talking about? How about time management? Email Exchanges ---Please do not email me on New E3. It is difficult to reply when I am reading your message on my phone. If you have any question, please send your message to chku@nctu.edu.tw. ---Please call me Prof. Ku, Chung-Hao, CHK, or Richard. ---Emails are for short notifications. If you have a list of questions, please ask me in class, make appointments, or visit me during my office hours. ---Please identify yourself in your message. Give me your Chinese/English names and student ID number, please. ---Your message should come with an appropriate subject line: for example, Questions about _________ (Communication Skills Workshop F2018). An appropriate subject line will help me remember and retrieve your message.
