本課程將帶領學生賞析英美文學作品,增強學生閱讀能力,並討論文本帶出的性別議題。每次上課範圍以一到二則英文短篇故事為原則,作品橫跨十九世紀中期到二十一世紀初期,體裁亦包羅萬象。我們會以細讀與討論的方式,瞭解作品歷史文化背景,並思考文本蘊含關於家庭、社會與性別的議題。我們會接觸一般外文系學生耳熟能詳的作家(如Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway與Tennessee Williams),但我們讀的故事會是在文學史必修課較少選讀或收錄的作品。此外,課程加入目前在英語系國家流行的作家(如Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro與Jamaica Kincaid)小品,彌補文學史選集遺珠之憾。課程圍繞著以下子題:青少年成長、婚姻、兩性、多元性別與身心障礙。
中文溝通能力
1. 為配合通識學程,此課程使用語言為中文。平常上課約有兩個小時由教師授課,帶領學生細讀文本。另外一小時學生與老師討論文本。 2. 這門課不需要同學分組報告,但請同學閱讀每篇短文後,試著回答教學大綱(紙本版)上的問題。上課老師會請同學回答,這算平常課堂參與成績。若同學沒缺席,但從不參與討論,平常成績只有60分。 3. 同學平常上課每缺席一次扣五點,扣到十點沒有為止。這十點佔全成績百分之十,也就是平常課堂參與的一半成績。遲到超過十分鐘以上也算缺席一次。因病或出公差請假時,不算缺席。事假算,但只會酌量扣點。 4. 課程分五單元,每單元都有一份回家作業。學生也可在課堂口頭報告作者相關著作,取代回家作業。每人整學期只有一次課堂報告的機會。五次成績共佔全成績百分之二十。 5. 平常上課鮮少有PowerPoint投影片,請同學務必出席聽講並參與討論。 6. 期中考與期末考皆是翻書考,題目會是上課討論過的內容。必要時可用中文回答。若有同學想寫書面報告代替期末考,請先與老師溝通。書面報告原則上是英文一千兩百到一千五百字(或中文兩千五到三千字)的某篇選讀短評或兩篇讀本比較。 7. 請避免在E3聯絡老師,如老師在手機上閱讀,無法直接回信給同學。請寫信到老師電子信箱chku@nctu.edu.tw。如果問題不是老師可簡短回答的,請來信約晤談時間。來信標題也請勿空白,會造成日後搜尋不便。請同學記得註明自己中(英)文名字與學號。
