Lexical items are building blocks of sentences. Therefore, it is impossible to understand sentence structures with no sufficient morphological knowledge. This course aims to enhance the enrolled students’ knowledge about morphology and syntax. In the first half of the semester, we will look at important morphological mechanisms. Later, we turn to syntax. The second part of this course will address important syntactic concepts such as phrase structure rules and transformational grammar. The ultimate goal of this course is to provide the enrolled students with tools that they can use to analyze human languages.

HOMEWORK POLICY 1. You may discuss homework with your classmates. However, simply copying your classmate’s answers is strictly prohibited. 2. All the assignments have to be turned in on time. If you turn in the homework one day after the due day, the score of the assignment will have a deduction of 10%; if your turn in the homework two days after the due day, the score of the assignment will have a deduction of 20%.
