This course is intended to provide elementary specific training in listening, speaking skills in Modern Standard Chinese to those with no prior knowledge of Chinese. The main purpose of this course is to enhance students’ basic communication ability in Chinese. The communicative functions include: introducing self and others; describing people, objects, places and events; discussing daily routines, etc. While learning the Chinese language, students will also be introduced to Chinese culture. Therefore, students who would like to develop their basic conversation skill in Chinese are welcome to this course. By the end of the course, students should be able to: ‧ know the Pinyin Romanization system well ‧ pronounce the sounds of Chinese with reasonable intelligibility ‧ comprehend short conversations in predicable areas of need ‧ be understood in short conversations in familiar situations with limited memorized vocabulary and structures ‧ know cultural context for certain usages

Reminders: 1. Character writing skill is required in this course. 2. Regular attendance is required, and students who have more than 5 unexcused absences will be failed. A total absence of 1/3 of course hours will lead to an automatic failure. 3. Supplementary course materials can be found on e3 platform. (https://dcpc.nctu.edu.tw/) NOTE: Students who missed the first class will be dropped from the course. If you can't come to the first class, let me know by mail ahead of time.
