Traffic flow theories seek to describe in a precise mathematical way the interactions between the vehicles and their operations and the infrastructure. These theories are an indispensable construct for all models and tools that are being used in the design and operation of streets and highways. The objectives of this course are to introduce the fundamental concepts of a traffic system, characteristics of traffic, models of traffic flow, and their applications. Students will also be equipped with the ability to handle traffic data for model calibration and development. After completing the course, students will be able to: (1) demonstrate an understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic traffic characteristics (2) demonstrate an understanding of traffic theory principles and statistical models (3) manipulate traffic data (such as VD, ETC) for traffic flow analysis and applications; (4) apply microscopic traffic simulation models and software (5) understand the future technologies and their role in the road traffic system
