Success or failure in business depends critically on the positioning of a company and the management of its resources. Through the lens of economics, strategic management, and industrial organization, students will learn to think systematically and strategically about achieving competitive advantage through the management of the firm’s resources. This course applies economic models and tools to understand online market phenomena, standards, network and platform economics, franchise bidding, industrial innovation, spillovers, patents and IPP.

Grading Schemes: Your score in the course will be based on the following (1) Class preparation and participation (20%) (2) Case study reports and discussion (30%) (3) Group case presentation (30%) (4) Individual research paper (20%) Case study reports and case presentation may be done in groups but do not have to be. Please turn in only one copy with all of the names on it. Groups may not be greater than 3 members. Case study reports should briefly answer the case questions. They should be approximately 1-2 pages long. The content is what is important. They are due at the start of the class period. Also remember that class participation will be weighted by quality, not by quantity.
