概述

Special Topic: Science Fiction Short Story and Film: gender, class, and ethnicity in light of speculative forms of agential matter This introduction to science fiction films and contemporary short stories aims to develop both an understanding of the generic conventions associated with various subgenera of science fiction and to situate them in historical contexts. While “genre” fiction, science fiction is well placed to explore contemporary issues and alter public debate on how emerging technologies alter our species as well as nonhuman species. Thus we will discuss clips of films and read short stories so as to analyze cultural antagonisms reflected in the works and various (social, political, ecological, philosophical) issues defining the period in which they were created.

Seminar (lecture, student presentations, discussion). Previewing film and TV series clips. Analyzing sf short stories, contexts and writing strategies.

Contribution to class discussion of readings: 25% Presentation on original topic: 25% Leading class discussion on assigned reading: 25% Final Project (original film, short story, or research essay): 25% Attendance: -2 from final grade for each unexcused absence.
