Description: A selective survey of the films of the Japanese New Wave, in the contexts of both Japanese sociocultural history and the theoretical issues that occupied the directors and screenwriters. Requirements: Regular attendance and participation in Thursday class, attendance at Tuesday evening screenings. One in-class presentation that MUST include the theoretical readings (plot summaries or review-type descriptions of films NOT accepted). Undergraduates will have take-home essay question mid-term and final. Graduate students will have two extra meetings – first to introduce prospective topics for final paper and second meeting for updating progress on conceiving of final paper. Graduate student final paper to be 10-15 pages plus bibliography. The essays listed Japanese here will be provided in English translation. Tuesday Screening schedule will be announced separately.
