概述

Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students' four English skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: -Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, -Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, -Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, -Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words. For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.

評分方式

1. Class attendance (10%): Class attendance and quality participation are important to the success of this class. Students should make every effort to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. The instructor will take attendance spontaneously. Any absence will detract from a student's participation grade. Three unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure of the course(不可超過三次無故缺席). Absence from class cannot be an excuse for missing the important announcements, the delay of assignments and projects or asking for a make-up exam. 2. Midterm and Final exam (40% with 20% each): There will be NO MAKE-UP for the exams unless you made other arrangements with the instructor in advance of the absence. 3. Required writing assignment: 5% (a passage of 170-200 words) 4. Language enhancement activities: 15%, including -In-class GEPT mock exams -By the end of the semester, students must take at least 4 GEPT online tests at http://140.113.9.12:8000/ (中高級四回聽力、閱讀全部做). -Use Self-Study Center resources (self-study stamps on VOD passport) 5. In-class and online activities (30%) -In-class activities (15%): Reciprocal learning (Brown & Palincsar, 1985) is a method of instruction whereby the students learn through sharing in the construction of meaning among themselves and/or with the instructor. Students in this class will be divided into collaborative learning groups in which they will take turn participating in different learning roles (i.e., facilitator, summarizer, questioner, recorder, and reporter). Because this course is interactive in nature, your active participation and preparation will be a strong component of your final grade. -Small Group Project & Presentation (15%)
