1. Participation is required in any English class; reading and writing courses need your active thinking and participation, too. Silent and inactive sit-ins, sleeping, or using cell phones in class will make your participation credits suffer or not to be granted. (*No free points for ‘participation’!) 2. Due to various activities that require students’ participation, regular attendance is very important. Absence up to six hours will make your semester grade suffer. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. 3. Always bring the textbook, A4 loose-leaf paper or paper notebook, to keep your learning record.
1. Attendance and participation 10% (No free points for 'participation!) 2. Quizzes 20% (Every quiz will test you on two text contents, including those NOT covered in my lectures.) 3. Writing assignments 30% (including (1) one paragraph writing assignment including multiple drafts and peers reviews, (2) several writing passages in responses to unit exercises, and (3) online study.) 4. Presentation 10% (Students have to read out loud their writing pieces, present writing structure, and share their reflection on the writing process.) 5. Reading journal 10% (Students have to keep a journal for assigned reading selections to reflect the use of reading strategies they have learned in this course. For details please refer to the guideline on e3.) 6. Final exam 20% (This is a timed writing exam for a pre-provided reading text. Students have to integrate reading and writing ability, use words or phrases they have learned throughout the course, and write a structured summary-response essay.)
