* 根據陽明交大上課時間表所列
This course aims at developing and enhancing students' public speaking skills from outlining and scripting an organized speech to applying specific language used in various parts of speeches. Each student is required to complete a group presentation on an assigned unit, practicing how to systematically give informative, layout, and demonstration speeches, how to manage voice and gestures smoothly, how to construct effective introductions and conclusions as well as how to handle visual aids effectively. In doing these, students can develop their confidence and fluency while they are presenting. The instruction also includes various speaking and pronunciation drills, followed by online EnglishCentral recording practice.
*欲修課者,第一堂請務必準時到課,否則視為自動放棄修課權利* The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule on the first class. If you do not attend the first class, you will lose your spot in this class.
1. Class materials will be uploaded to the E3 platform (http://dcpc.nctu.edu.tw/) 2. Active participation is required. Attendance will be taken in each class. Please join the class on time. Being late for more than twenty minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour. TWO POINTS will be taken off from your final grade for each hour of absence. Students are welcome to bring in their personal experience in public speaking and presentation as well as share their methods of improving the subject matter. 3. If you are absent due to uncontrollable situations, such as acute/severe illness, emergency, important occasions, etc., please file your application along with the valid proof on NCTU Students Leave System (http://stuoffcourse.nctu.edu.tw/) within 1 week. The medication receipt with correct stamp of date by accredited hospitals can be seen as a valid proof. The instructor reserves the right to refuse or revoke leave of absence application. If you are absent for more than 3 lessons without advance notice, you will fail the course. (For further information, please refer to http://scahss.sa.nctu.edu.tw/?wpdmpro=%E5%AD%B8%E7%94%9F%E8%AB%8B%E5%81%87%E8%A6%8F%E5%89%87) 4. Absence from a class is no excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in class. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what has been covered in the class by checking E3 or getting handouts/notes from the classmates. No late work will be accepted (unless you have requested an extension and been given approval ahead of the deadline).
1. Class attendance & participation 12% This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments. 2. Group presentation on textbook units 10% Each student will be assigned to a group and required to sign-up for a unit in the textbook, present the content and lead an activity based on that topic. 3. Speech & discussion practices 40% Each student will be required to practice outlining, scripting, and presenting different styles of speeches, such as impromptu, informative, layout, and demonstration speeches. 4. Final presentations 20% Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice. Your speech topic and outline will be reviewed and discussed at the in-class individual conference in Week 14th. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class. 5. E3 Online Platform participation 8% Students’ speech practices and final presentations will be recorded (video) and uploaded onto the E3 Online Platform where students can interactively leave comments and discuss. Students must give constructive feedback to at least 8 student videos before the end of the semester. Specific dates will be set up so you have sufficient time to accomplish this task. At least one paragraph is recommended per video. As you will be graded on the content of your feedback, please leave comments that will help the speaker improve. Merely saying “Good Job!” is not enough. The speech rubric could serve as a guideline or reference to help you give comments. 6. Cross-campus online discussion & field trip performance 10% Each student is required to attend several cross-campus online discussion and field trip with NCU students. Further details will be announced in class.
