概述

This course is designed to develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in a technical context. Each class will revolve around practical tasks and activities encouraging students to provide creative solutions to real world technical problems. These will enable students to consolidate and apply the knowledge they build up over the duration of the course. During the course students will be required to discuss and also give informal presentations on a wide variety of technical topics. Part of the course will also be dedicated to technical writing, giving students the skills to successfully write emails, memos, technical reports, instructions and procedures. The course objectives are as follows: 1. To increase the student's ability to read, comprehend and discuss his professional materials in English. This includes the following skills: a. the ability to extract information from texts as well as from visual forms of representation, such as diagrams and charts, etc.; b. an increased understanding of word formation as a means of vocabulary building; c. the ability to define relevant technical terms; and d. the ability to recognize and use various grammatical structures, especially those characteristic of technical writing. 2. To develop technical writing skills. 3. To enhance the student's ability to better understand spoken English.
